Aren't Boston cream pie and cake the same thing?

Aren't Boston cream pie and Boston cream cake the same thing? If not, what's the difference?Aren't Boston cream pie and cake the same thing?
I am a former chef and the first girl is partially correct, the cake base is generally cooked in a pie pan then split, the custard filling added then the top placed back on and the chocolate frosting added.

A cream cake which is similar to a UK type, and made with a similar cake but not the chocolate topping. Either search the 2, but I have been to Boston and never saw the 2 together, nor did I see them made the same way, some will use a split sponge instead of the shorter base, this may be the confusion in the naming.Aren't Boston cream pie and cake the same thing?
Boston cream pie called a pie but made with a split cake as a base instead of the usual pie crust. I don't know if there is another recipe called Boston cream cake that is different than the pie.
